Workshop on solid waste management

Jeudi 10 janvier He equipped du Projet de Gestion des déchets de Martissant à l'attend the workshop organized par le Ministère des travaux publics, des transports et des Communications (MTPTC) on the management of solid waste in the metropolis. This workshop aimed to bring together NGOs and private organizations working in the field to gather the fruits of their field experiences.

Since 2006, the MTPTC created a cell of solid waste management. It brings together mayors, the Metropolitan Department of Solid Waste Collection (SMCRS), the private sector and NGOs. This unit's mission is to improve the plight of the waste management in the country, particularly focusing on coordination and work on a study to find solutions to existing problems throughout the national territory. In 2010, the cell waste management has worked with the Task Force after the earthquake, for clearing in Port-au-Prince. Also in the capital, she pursued an essential work of coordination between actors in the management of solid waste, with SMCRS, city halls and local players. She participated in the development of a strategy for channel maintenance. The cell has also conducted a survey in the provincial towns to better understand the waste management. The results of this survey demonstrate the urgency to create treatment centers for proper waste management throughout the country, like this trying to do the towns of Jacmel and Cap. This investigation has fueled the work of setting up a strategic policy for managing solid waste in Port-au-Prince, directed by Haitian and international firms IBI, DAA and LGL Ltd. Finally, to improve sanitation in the capital, the cell solid waste management has worked with the National Water Supply and Sanitation (DINEPA) for the construction of the first sewage wastewater from the capital. This project, which is essential to fight against cholera and unsafe in the city, was unfortunately delayed for land issues.

coordination conducted by the cell's Department is working long term. These meet every week, NGOs, local councils, the SMCRS and private firms to understand their problems, exchange information and discuss ways to solve problems. Thus, coordination did opportunity to exchange information to better distribute the work to be performed on the metropolitan territory but also to assist NGOs to intervene in the most efficient way possible within the existing framework.

NGOs such as Concern Worldwide (St. Martin), Oxfam Intermon (Carrefour Feuilles), DWR (Carrefour Feuilles) Haiti Athletic / CEFREPADE (Cite Soleil), GRET, Solidarity (Brisetout) DAI (Carrefour), FOKAL (Marta) and the SMCRS, Boucart Pest Control and IBI DAA and LGL SA participated in the workshop organized by the Lessons Learned Cell February 10 2010 in the premises of DINEPA. This workshop was intended to pool the knowledge gained during the implementation of projects on technical aspects (number of cubic meters of waste removed, types of trucks used etc..). It was also to reflect on achievements in the fields of communication, with communities such as neighborhoods with the state and governance in the field of waste management, finally - and especially! - The sustainability of actions.

Among the first results of this work, it appears that all actors have the same difficulties to work jointly with public institutions: the partners are few and hard to reach, the institutions is opaque to an external, joint projects are very slow to implement. However, NGOs need better and more regularly transmit information on their projects at state institutions. For project sustainability, it is apparent that these projects should initially be conducted over several years to build power modes of operation with local residents, create habits, find substitutes financial ...

After the meeting, the cell of solid waste management reiterated that it is difficult today to develop cost-effective recycling systems in the city , although experiments are underway. The need to continue working on the production of compost organic waste was highlighted. Finally, the cell has recalled how the work of advocacy, information and training to the residents of neighborhoods affected by projects, but also in schools and businesses is vital to achieve in the years future, better waste management in the capital.
